BEYOND HUMANITY

At first glance, we all feel like the word ‘humanity’ is something we know, something that we are familiar with, something we hear in our everyday life. But at present, the word ‘humanity’ has become just a word people use in their conversations or speeches or debates saying “humanity is important.” or that “we cannot lose humanity.” But the true meaning behind it? The depth that this single word carries is never spoken of. Why humanity is important? Or Why we cannot lose it?

Why I say the word ‘humanity’ has become just a word is because look around you; Powerful people are leeching off the poor. If you use your voice for the sake of someone else; to correct something; to do something good, you cannot be sure whether you’ll be able to live to see the next day. Murder, stealing, drug dealing and all such illegal activities have become the headlines of the news. War has become so normal up to the fact that you can call it just a fight. Deaths of innocents are labelled as accidents. Terrorism has taken over the lives of so many. Race, gender, religion, colour has become the label that defines whether you are superior or inferior or whether you deserve to live or not or whether you are to suffer or to live luxuriously. Global warming is happening and still, people cut down the trees, burn the garbage and lay around the waste. Selfishness, hate, jealousy and cheating has become the new way of surviving. Greediness for money, property and power has become the new normal and this list could go on and on.

Many people believe that if you’re doing something for the sake of humanity, it needs to be a big, fancy ceremony or that it should have a hall filled with people or a big stage but, the simple truth is that you don’t need any of that to have humanity; to fight for humanity; to do something for the sake of humanity. It resides even in the small action you do.

Humanity is there when you help someone come back from a darker path. Humanity is there when you stand up against injustice, inequality and slavery. It is there when you become a voice for those who cannot speak. Humanity is there when you help a person who met with an accident, instead of just taking pictures. It is there when you give your meal to a homeless person. It is there when you take the limping street dog to the vet. It is there when you volunteer for charity work. It is there if you’re thinking twice about cutting down a tree or breaking something of another person or stealing something that is not yours. Humanity is there if you are thinking twice about pulling the trigger. It is there the day you decide that bullying or hating or insulting is not the moral thing to do. Humanity is there when you love someone. It is there when you care about a person, even if it is just a random stranger. Humanity is there when you put others before yourself. Even in such small actions, humanity lives in.

So many desires to do something for the sake of humanity. So many talks about saving humanity. Don’t just talk about it. There’s a reason why it is said that actions speak far better than words. Do something about it. Take the action. That is when it will become something beyond humanity.
